The figure of a
young woman alone in the room is impressing a sadness in her grim face. We
never know what she's thinking, and that doesn't really matter. Actually, one
more interesting concern is the fact that she's thinking about something. But
it is undeniable, there is a grief in young woman's face. A kind of inner turmoil in her mind. And I do
not want the audience to be trapped in such melancholy. So, to eliminate the
psychological effects of a deep sorrow on entire image that comes up inevitably
on the canvas's surface, I give a more subtle title: Contemplating. I really
expect the audience isn't involved in sadness when observing this young woman's
figure in more detail.
Contemplating, an art painting
70 x 90 cm, Oil on canvas
However, it does
not stop here. It's not merely on verbal expressions such as affirmation on a
statement with the simple word 'Contemplating'. Let’s take a look on the colors
part. The colors present throughout the room are far from gloomy. It can be
seen on the 3 solid colors that dominate such as red, blue and yellow. These
colors are expected to represent brightness as a symbol of cheerfulness, to
moderate the gloomy or sadness effect throughout the image.
I also try to add
some other aspects to the painting. It's very obvious I do not play the effects
of light and shadow, I also significantly reduce the perspective that is common
on 3-dimensional painting. A keen observer will find that the objects
potentially become 3-dimensional are only young female figure as the centre
point, pillow, messy blanket and the scattered books.
I did these steps
to open the way, so that it was easier to insert decorative elements that I
later added on purpose. Decorative characteristics appear on objects present in
2 dimensions with strong colors. As we can see at the tilt frame on the wall,
the lampshade and even the old-fashioned dresser table. In general, all the
objects I already mentioned are decorative elements that seem flat,
stylish and also helping to give value
to the proportion and balance. I also added a little geometric touch to the
round seat with striking colors, intended as a sweetener only.
Back to the case
of coloring, I let the colors become very strong by deliberately minimizing
color gradations, thus getting the impression of contrast everywhere. This is
like a resistance to negate the gloom and get a new meaning. This means that
the entire new image completely does not talk about one's misfortune or sadness,
but it has a deeper significance because someone is contemplating. Something
more valuable and very positive.
Of course, there
might be criticism that those steps as a method to articulate my goals were not
entirely successful. I realize there are many weaknesses that might still be an
excuse to debate for those who observe this painting more closely. I can
capture a kind of impression that the
absurdity factor then become prominent ...
Contemplation may
have a more intellectual impression, when someone grapples with big ideas, more
philosophical thoughts and so on. While the young female figure as the object
and at the same time as a subject for contemplation is far from the impression
of 'a thinker'. Maybe people keep on thinking that the figure of a young woman
who bends her hand touches her cheeks and forehead is closer to the expression
of a woman who is in deep sadness because of a breakup ... I am not in a
position to debate on such things. People may argue according to their own
thoughts and beliefs. And I let the absurdity find its own way ...
